MENINGOCOCCAL MENINGITIS VACCINE
Meningococcal disease is a serious bacterial illness. It is the leading cause of bacterial meningitis, a rapidly fatal disease if not identified expeditiously. Meningitis is an infection of the fluid surrounding the brain and spinal cord. The vaccine is recommended for travelers who visit areas recognized as having epidemic meningococcal disease, as well for all students who reside in dormitory dwellings. It is most prevalent in sub-Saharan Africa and is required for pilgrims to Mecca, and the annual Hajj in Saudi Arabia.
